Businessman Donald Trump is setting the pace for the 2016 GOP presidential field in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina with retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson in second position in all three early states, according to YouGov/CBS News surveys released this week.
Mr. Trump was at 29 percent support in Iowa in the race for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, followed by Mr. Carson at 25 percent and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas at 10 percent. No other candidate topped 6 percent.
In New Hampshire, Mr. Trump had 40 percent support, followed by Mr. Carson at 12 percent, Ohio Gov. John Kasich at 9 percent and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina at 8 percent.
And in South Carolina, Mr. Trump was at 36 percent, followed by Mr. Carson at 21 percent. No other candidate topped 6 percent there.
More than half of GOP voters in each state described themselves as “angry” at Washington as support for Mr. Trump and Mr. Carson, two men never before elected to public office, combined to top 50 percent in all three states.
The “CBS News 2016 Battleground Tracker” is based on interviews conducted on the Internet from Sept. 3-10 by online polling outfit YouGov with 4,860 registered voters in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.
The margin of error for the smaller subsets of GOP voters was plus or minus 5.7 percent in Iowa, plus or minus 6.3 percent in New Hampshire and plus or minus 4.5 percent in South Carolina.
