Republican businessman Donald Trump has a double-digit lead over a surging Ben Carson in a national survey on the 2016 GOP field out this week.

Mr. Trump had the support of 33 percent of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents in the Washington Post-ABC News poll — a 9-point jump from mid-July and a 29-point jump since late May before the billionaire real estate mogul entered the race.

Mr. Carson, the retired neurosurgeon who has risen to second place in recent polling on the race, was at 20 percent — 14 points higher than in July.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was at 8 percent, followed by Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida at 7 percent each, with no other candidate above 5 percent.

The survey conducted Sept. 7-10 includes 342 Republicans and GOP-leaning independents voters, with a margin of error of 6 points among that group.
