Exactly 14 years after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, began, President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama held a moment of silence Friday to honor those who died that day.
Mr. Obama, Mrs. Obama, and about 200 members of the White House staff assembled on the South Lawn of the White House at 8:46 a.m., the moment American Airlines Flight 11 hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center 14 years ago. The Obamas bowed their heads as three bells tolled before re-entering the White House Friday morning, beginning a day of remembrance ceremonies across Washington and around the country.
Later on Friday, Mr. Obama will visit Maryland’s Fort Meade and hold a town-hall meeting with members of the military, while Vice President Joseph R. Biden will speak Friday afternoon at a kickoff event for the annual Sept. 11 commemorative motorcycle ride in New York.
