New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio threw his support behind former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for president Friday, saying she’s most capable of tackling issues like income inequality in the country.
“I am endorsing or supporting Hillary Clinton enthusiastically because we have to take on income inequality. It is the issue of our time,” Mr. de Blasio said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “We have to restore the middle class, and Hillary Clinton knows how to do it, will get it done, and has [an] aggressive platform that speaks to all the changes we need, including progressive taxation” and uplifting working families.
Mr. de Blasio, who managed Mrs. Clinton’s 2000 U.S. Senate campaign in New York, had remained on the sidelines in terms of publicly supporting a candidate in the 2016 race, but said Mrs. Clinton has laid out a “very complete progressive agenda for taking on income inequality” over five months.
Mr. de Blasio said he would “absolutely” campaign for Mrs. Clinton.
