President Obama has called Speaker Paul Ryan to congratulate him on his election, and hopes he will lead the House in a bipartisan fashion, the White House said Thursday.
Mr. Obama actually phoned Mr. Ryan to wish him well on Wednesday, the day before the Wisconsin Republican took over as speaker. White House press secretary Josh Earnest said the president has “respect” for Mr. Ryan and hopes he’ll work with Democrats.
“For anything to make its way through the legislative process, it must be bipartisan,” Mr. Earnest said, adding that Mr. Ryan “will certainly find a willing partner” in the president.
