Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky said that he doesn’t believe that Rep. Paul Ryan will steer the House in a more conservative direction if he replaces John Boehner this week as speaker of the House.
“Is there going to be any change in the House with new leadership?” Mr. Paul said in the third GOP presidential debate in Colorado. “I frankly don’t think there will be much change because I think what is going to happen is you are going to get more of the same.”
Mr. Ryan, Wisconsin Republican and chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, is expected to be elected as Mr. Boehner’s replacement on Wednesday - a day after House lawmakers passed a budget deal that will allow President Obama to raise the nation’s borrowing limit an unlimited amount through the end of his second term, irking conservatives.
Mr. Paul said Wednesday that Republicans and Democrats are “spending us into oblivion” and said that congressional leaders should use the debate over the nation’s debt limit to pursue reforms that will cut the size and scope of the federal government.
