Ben Carson, the neurosurgeon turned GOP presidential front-runner, found a way to multitask Wednesday night, fielding questions in a televised debate while raising money simultaneously across the Internet.

Mr. Carson’s campaign sent out an email at exactly 8:01 pm, one minute after the CNBC debate in Boulder, Colorado, was supposed to start with the subject line: “Open this during the debate.”

The pitch: Fork over $5 or more for his campaign while watching the debate and possibly win a chance to meet with Mr. Carson.

“Are you watching the CNBC debate? It’s on right now,” the email solicitation said. “Take a look at Ben. He’s up on stage with nine other candidates. Then there are the moderators. And the studio audience. And millions of other people watching on TV.

“What if it was just you sitting with him over lunch, chatting about your family, your concerns, and your hopes for the future?”

After throwing out the fundraising appeal and naming the most recent Carson fan to win time with him, the appeal was kind enough to return the reader to the programming it pre-empted.

“Now back to the debate!” it ordered.
