President Obama ridiculed congressional Republicans and the GOP presidential candidates Friday as “gloomy” doomsayers.

“They are like Grumpy Cat,” Mr. Obama said, referring to a popular meme and making a frowning face. “Everything is terrible according to them. ’We’re doomed!’”

Speaking at a Democratic Women’s Leadership Forum in Washington, the president said GOP presidential candidates are in “the Twilight Zone” by pretending the years under President George W. Bush were pleasant.

“You listen to them and they’ve constructed this entire separate reality,” he said. “If you listen to them, it’s like those were the good old days. Then I came in and everything went to heck.”

He said Republicans “have to make up stuff is because they don’t have a record to run on.”

Speaking hours after Hillary Rodham Clinton addressed the crowd, Mr. Obama said he will support “whoever the nominee is,” which prompted the audience to laugh.

He criticized the GOP for “thinking about shutting down Planned Parenthood.”

“Government is not some conspiracy or plot,” he told the heavily female audience. “Government is us in a democracy.”
