SPOKANE, Wash. — An Idaho college’s former financial aid director has been sentenced to 107 days in jail for charges related to offering students financial aid in exchange for sex.
The Spokesman-Review reports (https://bit.ly/1kmqlH9) that a judge also gave 37-year-old Joseph Bekken three years of probation and a $10,000 fine. He will be allowed to work during his jail term.
He pleaded guilty to misusing public money and using a computer in a scheme to defraud.
Police say Bekken posted a Craigslist ad offering scholarship money in exchange for sex while working for Northern Idaho College.
Attorney Sean Walsh asked the judge not to send Bekken to prison. He said his client is remorseful and has already lost his career, family and reputation.
Kootenai County prosecutors argued for five years in prison and a larger fine.
