Businessman Donald Trump leads retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson by 5 points in a new poll on the 2016 GOP presidential field, with the rest of the contenders well back.
Mr. Trump was at 27 percent in the CNN/ORC polling numbers released Tuesday, with Mr. Carson at 22 percent. Support for Mr. Trump increased 3 points since last month, while support for Mr. Carson jumped 8 points.
Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida were tied at 8 percent apiece, followed by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky at 5 percent each.
Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina lost 11 points of support since the last poll, going from 15 percent to 4 percent. She was tied with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, followed by Ohio Gov. John Kasich at 3 percent, former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania at 2 percent, and Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina at 1 percent.
Mr. Trump led Mr. Carson among men by 10 points, 31 percent to 21 percent, while the two candidates were tied at 23 percent apiece among women.
The survey conducted Oct. 14-17 included 465 registered Republicans and GOP-leaning independents, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points for that group.
