Rookie running back Matt Jones will not play for the Washington Redskins against the New York Jets on Sunday after spraining one of his toes in the loss to the Atlanta Falcons last week.

Jones worked out on the field before the game and was considered a game-time decision, but the decision was made to hold him out. Through five games, Jones has rushed for 220 yards and three touchdowns, including a 123-yard, two-touchdown performance in a Week 2 victory over the St. Louis Rams.

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson, ruled out on Saturday, was not expected to travel with the team for the game, but was indeed at MetLife Stadium working out before the game on Sunday. Jackson strained his left hamstring in the Week 1 loss to the Miami Dolphins and was targeting a return against the Jets before aggravating the hamstring at practice this week.

The Redskins had also previously ruled out left tackle Trent Williams and tight end Jordan Reed, who are recovering from a concussion. Center Kory Lichtensteiger, who has experienced weakness in his left arm as the result of a pinched nerve, and cornerbacks Chris Culliver (bruised left knee) and DeAngelo Hall (sprained right big toe) were also ruled out in advance.

With so many players injured, the Redskins will list quarterback Robert Griffin III as active for the first time this season, allowing him to dress for the game. Griffin, still the third quarterback, had been inactive for the first five games.
