EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Robert Griffin III was active for the first time this season in the Washington Redskins’ 34-20 loss to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium.

The Redskins had seven key players out with injuries and chose to activate Griffin, who watched the previous five games out of uniform. Colt McCoy has been the backup to Kirk Cousins all season.

Griffin did not play on Sunday, nor did he expect to, as the game spiraled away from the Redskins.

“It’s not my call,” Griffin said.

“I’m not going to talk about myself and our team,” he added. “We need to win next week. So, that’s all we’re focused on. I’m not focused on, you know, what I’ve had to go through or anything like that. So, we just focus on Tampa Bay for next week.”

Teams are required to sit out seven players on their 53-man roster for games, and the Redskins had seven injured players who could not play.

Coach Jay Gruden indicated Cousins will remain the starter next week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after a poor performance on Sunday.

Cousins threw two interceptions against New York and now has eight this season. He has thrown only six touchdown passes.

McCoy has not played in a regular-season game this season.
