Vice President Joseph R. Biden assured South Korean President Park Geun-hye that the U.S. will defend her country against “North Korean provocations,” the White House said.

In a lunch meeting at the Naval Observatory, Mr. Biden commended Ms. Park for her “efforts to improve inter-Korean ties.” He also reaffirmed the “unwavering” U.S. commitment to “deter and defend” against menacing from Pyongyang, the statement said.

Tensions between the north and south flared in August when land mines maimed two South Korean soldiers on the border.

Ms. Park will hold a summit with President Obama at the White House on Friday.

Mr. Biden and Ms. Park discussed the importance of “strong regional relations and close coordination on common strategic interests,” the White House said.
