Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton “did what she had to do” in fending off her Democratic presidential rivals during Tuesday’s debate in Las Vegas.
“She got through it. She got through it fine,” Mr. Trump said Wednesday on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” “I thought the others were not strong. They were not going after her. It was a very kind debate, very gentle. And she got through the debate. She’s got a substantial lead in the polls, so they had to hit her hard, and they decided not to do that.”
Sen. Bernard Sanders of Vermont said at one point to Mrs. Clinton that “the American people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails” — a reference to the unique email arrangement she had as secretary of state that Mr. Trump acknowledged was “a good sound bite.”
“But you have an FBI investigation going on. He gave up the email situation right then and there; I think that’s a mistake,” Mr. Trump said. “He’s losing by so much that he really shouldn’t have done that, although it was a nice moment for him and a nice moment for her. Actually, a much better moment for her.”
