Without mentioning the team’s name, President Obama suggested Thursday that the Washington Redskins could use the help of sports equipment manufacturer Adidas to change their name.

At the annual Tribal Nations Conference in Washington, Mr. Obama said in response to a question from the audience that Adidas has developed a “smart, creative approach” to working with about 2,000 schools and universities to change their Native American mascots, offering to redesign their entire sports brand.

“I don’t know if Adidas made the same offer to a certain NFL team, here in Washington,” Mr. Obama said to cheers from the crowd. “But they might want to think about that as well.”
