Washington Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby was named the “Second Star of the Week” by the NHL on Monday after starting — and winning — games against the Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets, Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Holtby, who has won his last seven starts, had a 1.75 goals-against average and a .945 save percentage in the four games last week. He had 33 saves in a 1-0 victory over the Oilers for his first shutout of the season and had 32 saves in the games against the Lightning and Maple Leafs.
The weekly honor was the first for the Capitals since Oct. 25, when center Evgeny Kuznetsov was named the “First Star of the Week.” Holtby has not been recognized by the league since March 14, 2011, when he earned “First Star” honors — the only other time he has picked up such an award.
Holtby leads the league with 15 wins and a 1.95 GAA, and has a .926 save percentage, entering the Capitals’ road game against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday.
