OPINION:
The Obama administration is suspending reality to think that Russia and Iran are going to allow the Assad regime to fall. It’s a pipe dream and it’s not going to happen.
Syria is a long-term Soviet and Russian ally. Mr. Assad’s father and the Soviets were pals. Russia has a critical naval base at Tartus, their toehold in the Mediterranean. Russia now has an air base near Latakia, Syria and has staked its military honor on defending the Assad regime. Russian troops are validating new Russian hardware and tactics against the Syrian rebels and ISIS.
What is really going on is a new hegemon is now dominating the Middle East—the new axis of Iran and Russia. This is an incredible change of events from when the Obama administration took power. Does anyone even remember the Iraq that President Obama inherited from George W. Bush?
Today, after a meeting in Tehran between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Kremlin stated that Russia and Iran will jointly oppose “external attempts” at regime change in Syria.
AFP quoted the Iranian Supreme Leader, “Syria’s president was elected by people of various political, religious and ethnic views in a general election. The US cannot ignore Syrians’ vote and choice. US has a “long-term plan” to dominate Syria and the Middle East that would “disadvantage all countries, especially Iran and Russia.”
Done. Case closed.
President Obama has made a deal with the devil in giving Iran a path to nuclear weapons. The only thing to do now is to figure out a way to mitigate the serious damage done to American national security. That herculean task will fall to the next administration.
