President Obama was briefed by national-security aides Friday about the unfolding terrorist attack on a hotel in Mali.
“We’re monitoring the situation,” Mr. Obama told reporters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he is attending a summit as part of a 10-day trip.
During a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, Mr. Obama noted that Malaysia is part of the U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.
“We have developed a very strong relationship around counterterrorism,” the president said. “Malaysia, like Indonesia, are majority Muslim countries that represent tolerance and peace, and as a consequence, its voice is critical in the debate taking place internationally around terrorism.”
