An entertainment reporter for the District’s Fox affiliate surprised his girlfriend with a wedding proposal composed partially of quotes from the couple’s favorite films. Kevin McCarthy of WTTG Fox 5 and girlfriend of four years Lauren Veneziani were being photographed together with actors dressed up as characters from “The Nightmare Before Christmas” at Disney World on Halloween when Mr. McCarthy dropped to one knee and began his film quote-laced soliloquy:
“Lauren Veneziani, I love you more than anything and ever since our first date at Taco Bell,” Mr. McCarthy began as realization of what was occurring dawned on Ms. Veneziani’s face. Mr. McCarthy’s proposal included such film quotables as: “You complete me” from “Jerry Maguire”; “I’m just a boy standing in front a girl asking her to love him,” a gender-inverted variant of a Julia Roberts moment from “Notting Hill”; “When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible” from the 1989 romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally”; and “As anyone can see, we’re simply meant to be, baby” from “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”
In a true Hollywood ending, Ms. Veneziani, a film critic at DCFilmGirl.com, accepted his entreaty. The couple kissed to seal the engagement as the actors in Jack and Sally “Nightmare Before Christmas” character getup applauded alongside nearby well-wishers.
The newly engaged couple appeared on Fox 5’s “Good Day DC” Monday morning, where the staff feted them with cake and champaign. Mr. McCarthy related on the show working in secret with Ms. Veneziani’s family and the theme park’s personnel to ensure the moment was touched with both Tinseltown and Disney magic.
However, he said on the show, his proposal was not error-proof: Mr. McCarthy left out an intended line from the 1993 Quentin Tarantino-scripted drama “True Romance.”
According to Fox 5, the couple met when Ms. Veneziani’s father, upon seeing one of Mr. McCarthy’s reviews on television, suggested she get in touch with him.
The station also announced that Jim Lokay has joined WTTG as both reporter and anchor effective Nov. 16. Mr. Lokay will report on news and sports for “FOX 5 News” at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.
