ASHBURN — Washington Redskins outside linebacker Junior Galette has been suspended two games without pay by the NFL for his role in a domestic violence incident in January.
Though Galette is on injured reserve, the two-game suspension will be served immediately, according to a league spokesperson.
Coach Jay Gruden said on the Monday that the Redskins were expecting the suspension.
“I don’t have much to say on that,” Gruden said.
Less than a month after the Redskins signed Galette to a one-year contract worth $745,000, he tore his left Achilles’ tendon, which required season-ending surgery. Gruden said Galette is on track with his rehab.
Galette was released by the New Orleans Saints on July 27 after a series of off the field issues. He was arrested on domestic violence charges in January that were later dropped. Galette also appeared in a two-year-old video uncovered in June that showed him brandishing a belt on a beach, though no charges were filed from that incident.
The Redskins signed him on July 31. Last September, the Saints signed Galette to a four-year, $41.5 million contract and are responsible for roughly $17.5 million of the $21 million he was guaranteed.
In August, Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan said there was “no doubt” the team will try to re-sign him in the offseason.
