A California State University, Long Beach, student was killed in a string of terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday, the school announced Saturday.
Nohemi Gonzalez, 23, an El Monte resident, was a junior studying design during a semester abroad program in the French capital. The school did not give specific details of her passing.
“I’m deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Long Beach State University student Nohemi Gonzalez. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this sad time,” University President Jane Close Conoley said in a statement. “Our university stands with our nearly eighty foreign exchange students from France as they struggle with this tragedy. We will extend all support necessary to comfort them. We will also extend support to all students, faculty and staff who are in need.”
The university will hold a vigil at 4 p.m. on Sunday to mourn Gonzalez’s passing and to grieve for all the victims of the Paris attacks.
“We can confirm that U.S. citizen Nohemi Gonzalez was killed in Paris on November 13. We offer our sincere condolences to her family and friends. Out of respect for privacy for Ms. Gonzalez’s family, we have nothing further,” said Mark Toner, deputy spokesman for the State Department.
At least two other Americans have been injured in the attacks, according to the State Department. Their identities have not yet been revealed.
A series of shootings and suicide bombings at six locations in and around Paris on Friday night killed 129 and wounded at least 352.
