Sen. Ted Cruz said Tuesday that the media would see the issue of immigration in a much different light if a surge of journalists were illegally flowing into the United States, making it harder for them to land jobs and get higher pay.
“I understand when the mainstream media covers immigration, it often doesn’t see it as an economic issue, but I can tell you for millions of Americans at home watching this, it is a very personal economic issue,” Mr. Cruz, Texas Republican, said.
“I would say the politics of it would be very, very, different if a bunch of lawyers or bankers were crossing the Rio Grande — or if a bunch of people with journalism degrees were coming over and driving down the wages in the press,” he said.
Mr. Cruz drove home the message during the fourth GOP debate Tuesday on Milwaukee, which featured eight candidates, and included a heated discussion on immigration.
Mr. Cruz warned that the GOP is doomed if it supports “amnesty” for illegal immigrants.
“The Democrats are laughing because if Republicans join Democrats as the party of amnesty we will lose,” Mr. Cruz said.
