Billionaire businessman and 2016 GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump on Monday asked what we’re coming to when a candidate is trying to prove a past history of violence.
“You stab somebody, and the newspapers say you didn’t do it,” Mr. Trump said at a rally in Springfield, Illinois. “And you say, ’Yes, I did. I did.’ “
“This is the only election in history where you’re better off if you stab somebody. What are we coming to?” he said.
That was a reference to one of his main 2016 GOP rivals, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, whose story of how he tried to stab someone when he was a teenager has received renewed media scrutiny in recent days.
“People are getting away with murder. I never saw anything like this,” Mr. Trump said. “You [can] say anything about anybody, and their poll numbers go up.”
