New Jersey Gov. and potential GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie, who is in the early voting state of New Hampshire this week, is offering somewhat of a defense of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady amid the newly-released report on the “Deflategate” incident.
“I think there’s a little bit too much attention on this,” Mr. Christie, a lifelong Cowboys fan, told IJReview in Manchester, New Hampshire, which is about 80 miles from Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. “I mean, I don’t think anybody’s really trying to say that Tom Brady won four Super Bowls or became a future Hall of Famer because the balls were a little under-inflated.
“I think the media and others love, for somebody who’s married to a beautiful model, who’s richer than you can imagine, and who’s a future Hall of Famer, to take a couple shots at him — people like that every once in a while. I think it’s way, way overblown,” Mr. Christie said.
A report released earlier in the week said it was “more probable than not” that team staffers were involved in an effort to improperly let air out from game balls used during the AFC championship game and that it was “more probable than not” that Mr. Brady was “at least generally aware” of the activities.
Mr. Brady said Thursday evening that the Patriots’ Super Bowl win was not tainted, but did not venture into specifics involving the report from investigator Ted Wells. Mr. Brady’s agent, Don Yee, has blasted the report.
