ATLANTA — After trying to warm up Tuesday night, John Wall was ruled out of Game 2 of the Washington Wizards’ Eastern Conference semifinals against the Atlanta Hawks because of a sprained left wrist and swelling in his hand.
Wall said at shootaround earlier in the day there was “no doubt” in his mind that he would play Tuesday night. Instead, he will be inactive for the game. Ramon Sessions will start in his place.
The all-star point guard was injured in Game 1 on Sunday when Atlanta point guard Jeff Teague ran underneath Wall while he was on the break. Wall put out his left hand to brace himself during the fall. After landing, Wall remained on the ground for some time and later said he thought he broke his left wrist. He had previously broken that wrist during his sophomore year in high school.
Wall did not practice Monday. He said he could dribble a little bit, but that was it, during shootaround Tuesday.
Less than two hours before Game 2 began, Wizards coach Randy Wittman lauded Wall’s toughness, saying Wall was one of the toughest players he had been around and that a decision for him to play was up to Wall and the doctors, but said all players would be available for Game 2. Wittman noted that if Wall ever actually sat out, it meant he was really hurt.
Sitting Wall out Tuesday night gives him an extended break. The Wizards don’t play Game 3 until Saturday. The longest break of the Eastern Conference semifinals with the Hawks comes after Game 2. The Wizards will have three full days before Saturday night’s 5 p.m. tip.
The Wizards took a 1-0 series lead by winning Game 1, 104-98, Sunday.
Sessions was acquired Feb. 19 in a trade for Andre Miller. The Wizards often played him next to Wall, as well as with the second unit. With Wall out of the rotation and Sessions starting, there could be opportunities for Garrett Temple or Will Bynum to see more minutes. Bynum was not active in Game 1. Temple is coming off a hamstring injury that kept him out at the end of the season and for all of the first round against the Toronto Raptors.
