Though Baltimore has long been governed by Democrats, a prominent congressman says Republicans and their budget priorities are to blame for the economic woes in the city and elsewhere across the country.
Rep. Chris Van Hollen, Maryland Democrat, said his party has put forward proposals that would lead to more employment in Baltimore and reduce poverty rates, but those proposals have been blocked by Republicans.
“We have made gains, but we know what’s happening in Baltimore. We’ve got a long ways to go, which is why we have put forward proposals to begin to address these kinds of matters on an urgent basis,” he said on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.
“There are specific proposals right now in Congress that can make things better in places like Baltimore and around the country. And instead what we passed in Congress, the Republicans, $10 million estates get no estate tax.”
Mr. Van Hollen — who is running to fill the seat of retiring Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski — was referring to a provision in the Republican budget that would repeal the estate tax.
