WASHINGTON - The 2014 release of the RAND study commissioned by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation uncovered numerous gaps in support for America’s 5.5 million military and veteran caregivers. In response, the Foundation launched Hidden Heroes: The National Coalition for Military and Veteran Caregivers, and created seven Impact Councils to address the most urgent concerns of those caring for wounded, ill and injured warriors. Based on recommendations from the RAND study, each council is focusing on one of the following areas:

• Community Support at Home

• Education and Training

• Employment and Workplace Support

• Financial and Legal Issues

• Interfaith Action and Ministry

• Mental and Physical Health

• Respite Care

The councils bring together experts and organizations renowned for their accomplishments in the seven impact areas. Many participants have already initiated caregiver support programs as members of the Foundation’s National Coalition, launched last spring. Booz Allen Hamilton hosted and facilitated the first meeting of the councils at an Impact Forum in February. The Forum also included remarks from Senator Elizabeth Dole and panel discussions with caregivers and service providers.

At the Hidden Heroes Summit on May 20, the Foundation will announce the councils’ progress in pursuing evidence-based and forward-thinking strategies that members of the growing National Coalition can execute in the months and years to come.
