Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania will announce Wednesday that he is running for president.

Matt Beynon, a Santorum spokesman, confirmed reports that his boss is taking another stab at the GOP presidential nomination, after finishing second to Mitt Romney in the 2012 race.

ABC News first reported the story.

Mr. Santorum is running near the back of the pack in early polls, but he has expressed confidence in his ability to build a winning coalition in what is shaping up to be a crowded GOP field.

Republican analysts say Mr. Santorum has an uphill battle on his hands.

Mr. Santorum is scheduled to make his announcement at 5 p.m. at Penn United Technologies, a manufacturing company near his boyhood home in Bulter County, Pennsylvania.
