While raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Democratic Party, President Obama on Wednesday night blasted Congress for failing to act on everything from immigration reform to education.
Speaking at a Miami fundraiser, the president said the U.S. is poised to lead the world in medicine, infrastructure, education and a host of other issues but is being held back by the GOP-controlled Congress.
“On all these fronts, we’ve done great work, but we have so much more that we could be doing,” he said. “And the reason it’s not getting done is not because we don’t know what to do. It’s because we’re stuck in Congress on so many of these issues.”
Mr. Obama attended two Miami fundraisers on Wednesday, each raising money for the Democratic National Committee. The first, a party roundtable closed to the press, drew about 30 supporters, each paying up to $33,400 each.
The second was attended by about 60 supporters, each paying up to $33,400 each, Democratic Party officials said. Reporters were allowed inside the second fundraiser during the president’s opening remarks, which lasted about seven minutes. The press was then ushered out while Mr. Obama took part in a question-and-answer session.
The president said it’s up to voters to make sure Congress does its job.

“We’ve got to get people involved so that Congress ultimately responds to an electorate that is expressing our highest and best values around issues like climate change and issues like education,” he said. “I am confident that we’re going to be able to do that, but I can’t do it without folks like you.”
