Now who will tell Smithers to release the hounds? Harry Shearer, who voices the character Mr. Burns on Fox’s “The Simpsons,” is leaving the show after 26 seasons.

Mr. Shearer, who also brings life to Ned Flanders and Principal Skinner, indicated that a contract dispute was the cause of his departure.

“This because I wanted what we’ve always had: the freedom to do other work,” he said on Tweeter Wednesday night. He also thanked fans for all of their support.

Voice actors Hank Azaria, Nancy Cartwright, Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner and Yeardley Smith have signed on for two more seasons, Variety reported Wednesday.

The season final of “The Simpsons” is this Sunday.
