The Archdiocese of San Francisco is giving parishioners an option to do away with crumpled bills in favor of making donations through a digital collection plate.
Catholics in the Bay Area will be able to give charitably through their computers and smartphones this Friday, NBC reported Wednesday. Church leaders teamed up with a company called Evergive to make it happen.
Father Anthony Giampietro, the interim director of development for the Archdiocese of San Francisco, told NBC that the move will help parishes that operate on a tight budget.
“It helps our parishes, especially those with limited resources, get access to a level of technology that they never could have afforded,” the priest said.
The decision will affect 300,000 to 400,000 Catholics in the area.
Evergive’s technology also provides forums that members can frequent.
“Just because people are only physically going to church once a week doesn’t mean that they only have to be part of that community once a week,” Evergive CEO James Ioannidis told NBC.
