(AP) - The president of Southern University and A&M College System in Louisiana has been named the next president of the University of the District of Columbia.
UDC’s board announced Tuesday that it has chosen Ronald Mason Jr. as the school’s next leader. Mason was previously president of Jackson State University and held top leadership roles at Tulane University. Mason will join UDC on July 1.
Elaine Crider, who leads the university’s board, says Mr. Mason has proven himself to be a leader in higher education.
In a statement Tuesday, Mayor Muriel Bowser praised the selection. She says she intends to restore full funding for the university in the District’s 2016 budget.
UDC’s board fired the previous president, Allen Sessoms, in 2013.
Mr. Mason earned his undergraduate and law degrees at Columbia University.
