Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee says he’s no longer doing infomercials for a product that claims to reverse diabetes now that he’s a presidential candidate and said dietary supplements were just one of the elements of a plan he was advocating.
In an interview that aired Sunday, CBS “Face the Nation” host Bob Schieffer cited a piece in National Journal that said such treatments that Mr. Huckabee was touting were not supported by the medical community.
“Well, there is going to be a lot of criticism thrown my way,” Mr. Huckabee said. “One of the things that I have said is that the particular plan you are talking about is about the healthy eating, watching the kind of foods one takes in. And, you know, I don’t have to defend everything that I have ever done. I am not doing those infomercials obviously now as a candidate for president. But if that’s the worst thing somebody can say to me is that I advocated for people who have diabetes to do something to reverse it and stop the incredible pain of that, then I am going to be a heck of a good president.”
Mr. Huckabee said the notion that he was selling pills was a “misnomer,” and that one of the elements of a plan was dietary supplements, coupled with exercise and good eating habits.
“If we approach this as I have suggested, which is looking for cures, rather than just treatment, we then not only save lives,” Mr. Huckabee said. “We start saving serious money. And that’s one of the reforms we need to be talking about nationally.”
