Most days in the Dub household, Kimberly Dub fills in empty spaces for her husband, Rob, who was diagnosed in 2010 with PTSD. For the past five years she has effectively been his nurse, scheduler, medication administrator, coach, chef and emotional confidant, constantly at his side to help him complete tasks. On better days, she can be a sideline coach, encouraging Rob as he manages the day’s challenges. Because Rob is home alone during the day, Kim returns from her full-time job at noon each day, preparing him a lunch, as well as checking on him by text throughout her work day to make sure all is well.
As a participant in the VA’s peer mentoring program, Kimberly shares her insights with other caregivers. She continues to offer encouragement and support to other caregivers through her role as an Elizabeth Dole Fellow, offering the benefit of her experiences, both the successes and the challenges.
