Marilyn Mosby, 35, is the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City who took over in January and is the youngest chief prosecutor of any major city in America, according to the State’s Attorney’s office website.
A graduate of Tuskegee University and Boston College Law School, she spoke during her campaign for the position about the daylight shooting death of her 17-year-old cousin on her front doorstep in 1994, according to CNN.
“I learned very early on that the criminal justice system isn’t just the police, the judges and the state’s attorney,” said Mrs. Mosby, who comes from a long line of law enforcement in her family, including her grandfather, four uncles and mother. “It’s much more than that. I believe that we are the justice system. We, the members of the community, are the justice system because we are the victims of crimes.”
Ms. Mosby, who was named as one of the Baltimore Sun’s 50 Women to Watch in 2013 andy 2014, prosecuted some of the worst felonies in Maryland during her first stint in the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office, according to NBC. Before being elected to her current post, Ms. Mosby worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance for three years.
Baltimore city councilman Nick Mosby is her husband.
“This is bigger than Freddie Gray,” he said in an interview with Fox News on Monday night. “This is about the socioeconomics of poor urban America.” The rioters were exhibiting “decades-old anger and frustration for a system that’s failed them,” he added.
