Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley will not seek the U.S. Senate seat of retiring longtime Sen. Barbara Mikulski, multiple outlets reported Tuesday.
Mr. O’Malley said in a statement, according to the AP, that he was “hopeful and confident that very capable public servants with a desire to serve in the Senate will step up as candidates for this important office. I will not be one of them.”
After Ms. Mikulski announced Monday she will retire at the end of her term, the spotlight turned to Mr. O’Malley, a former Baltimore city mayor who is pondering a presidential run in 2016, among other Democrats, as a possible replacement for her.
