CLEVELAND (AP) — The mother of a 12-year-old boy who had a pellet gun when he was fatally shot by Cleveland police will discuss the city’s response to the family’s federal lawsuit.
Tamir Rice’s mother and her attorneys planned a news conference Tuesday. It comes a day after Mayor Frank Jackson apologized for wording in a court document in which the city said the boy died as a result of his own actions.
Jackson says Cleveland’s response was poorly worded and offensive, and the city will modify the wording of its defense.
Family attorney Walter Madison tells the Northeast Ohio Media Group that Tamir’s mother was emotionally shattered by the city’s response but accepted the mayor’s apology.
Tamir was shot Nov. 22 as officers responded to a call about someone with a firearm.
