A Turkish lawmaker said Monday that a group of medical students — including one American — “disappeared” into Syria on a quest to treat injured members of Islamic State.
The American is among a group of medical students who Turkish lawmaker Mehmet Ali Ediboglu told CNN have exited the country in an attempt to join Islamic State-controlled hospitals. There are 11 individuals missing in total, which includes Canadians and Britons.
“They have been cheated, brainwashed. That is what I, and their relatives, think,” Mr. Ediboglu told The Observer.
“We have heard from the British, Turkish and Sudanese authorities that we have so far met, but we hope that the respectable governments of these countries would enforce, speed up and coordinate more effective measures to ensure the safety of our children wherever they are and bring them back to us as soon as possible,” the students’ and doctors’ families said in a statement, CNN reported.
