Sen. Ted Cruz has run into a bit of a digital snag since announcing his bid for the presidency, as it appears a President Obama supporter is “domain squatting” at TedCruz.com.
The Texas Republican’s official website is TedCruz.org, but Web users who accidentally travel to TedCruz.com will be urged to “Support President Obama. Immigration reform now!”
According to Internet records, TedCruz.com was created in April 2004 by an Arizona-based real estate firm, Ted Cruz and Associates, The Hill reported. Ownership of the site apparently changed hands last spring.
Meanwhile, TedCruzForAmerica.com, which was registered Monday, redirects Web users to the Obamacare site HealthCare.gov.
Mr. Cruz’s digital dilemma shines a light on the role of “domain squatters,” who buy up scores of campaign-related website names in hopes to sell them later at a hefty price, The Hill reported.
Celebrities and businesses have gotten into the practice of nabbing more nefarious domain names like .porn and .adult in order to better control their online presence from trolls.
