Aerospace company Boeing now has a patent for a force-field-like device that seems like it could be used in a “Star Wars” film.

“Method and system for shock wave attenuation via electromagnetic arc” senses when an explosion has occurred and then uses laser technology to ionize the air. The result is a plasma field of protection that can shield military assets from damage, ABC reported Monday.

“Explosive devices are being used increasingly in asymmetric warfare to cause damage and destruction to equipment and loss of life. The majority of the damage caused by explosive devices results from shrapnel and shock waves,” the patent says.

Boeing’s new technology cannot protect against direct hits at this time, but it can protect troops and vehicles from the deadly effects of a nearby blast.
