Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi will travel to Washington on April 14 and meet with President Obama at the White House, administration officials said Monday.
It will be Mr. Abadi’s first trip to the U.S. since becoming prime minister last August. Mr. Abadi came to power just as the U.S. and its international partners began an air campaign against the Islamic State terrorist organization.
The battle against the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, will be a key topic when Mr. Obama and Mr. Abadi meet next month.
“The prime minister’s visit underscores the strategic partnership between the United States and Iraq and the strong U.S. commitment to political and military cooperation with Iraq in the joint fight against ISIL,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest said in a statement. “The president and prime minister will discuss a range of issues, including continued U.S. support to Iraq to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL.”
