An aide to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s political team has stepped down after drawing fire for comments she has made about the early presidential state of Iowa.

“The tone of some of my tweets concerning Iowa was at odds with that which Gov. Walker has always encouraged in political discourse,” GOP strategist Liz Mair said in a statement announcing her resignation, The Associated Press reported. “I wish Gov. Walker and his team all the best.”

Ms. Mair had been hired to work on online communication efforts for Mr. Walker, whose well-received performance at a January forum in Iowa hosted by GOP Rep. Steve King has helped push him to the top or near the top of recent public polling on the potential 2016 GOP presidential field.

“In other news, I see Iowa is once again embarrassing itself, and the GOP, this morning. Thanks, guys,” she tweeted on Jan. 24, the day of the event, adding, “The sooner we remove Iowa’s frontrunning status, the better off American politics and policy will be.”

Iowa GOP chairman Jeff Kaufmann told the AP Tuesday that Ms. Mair’s comments were “not only incorrect, they’re rather juvenile, they’re naive, they’re ignorant.”

In a statement to the AP, Walker senior aide Rick Wiley said: “We accept those who have a variety of viewpoints on issue, but what we ultimately must have is absolute respect for people across the country.”
