Double chin procedure could end skin condition with simple injection; FDA ruling expected soon

An FDA advisory panel’s recent recommendation will put a smile on the face of anyone who wants to do away with his or her double chin.

The panel’s decision gives momentum to doctors’ efforts to gain FDA approval for using deoxycholic acid on patients.

“The trend has been finding things that are noninvasive, with little to no risk, little to no down time, that can make an improvement,” plastic surgeon Dr. Leo McCafferty told CBS Thursday.

The drug, which dissolves fat, is seen as a safe — and cheaper — alternative to other forms of plastic surgery.

“It doesn’t involve a very expensive piece of equipment, like a laser which might cost $100,000. It involves a syringe, the product and the needle,” Dr. McCafferty told CBS.

The FDA is expected to make a final decision on deoxycholic acid in May.
