Chris Culliver, a cornerback who spent his first four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, signed a contract with the Washington Redskins on Friday afternoon.
Culliver visited Redskins Park on Thursday night and met with team officials and returned Friday to sign his contract, which is a four-year deal worth $32 million, according to multiple reports.
The 6-foot, 199-pound Culliver started all 14 games he played for the 49ers last season, when he had 45 tackles and four interceptions and broke up 10 other passes. The performance came a year after he missed all of 2013 with a torn ACL in his left knee.
He also faces charges stemming from a hit-and-run incident in San Jose last March, in which Culliver hit a bicyclist with his vehicle and then threatened a witness. Culliver was charged with felony possession of metal knuckles, as well as a misdemeanor charge of hit-and-run causing injury and misdemeanor hit-and-run causing property damage. His hearing, originally set for June, has repeatedly been continued.
Culliver’s addition will add depth to a unit that struggled last season after the loss of cornerback DeAngelo Hall to a torn left Achilles’ tendon on Sept. 21. Rookie Bashaud Breeland was perhaps the Redskins’ biggest surprise last season, but his play was offset by that of second-year cornerback David Amerson, who was handed a starting role when the year began but whose lapses became more frequent as the season progressed.
The Redskins have now signed four players since the start of the free agent signing period on Tuesday, all of them on defense. The team signed former Chicago Bears defensive tackle Stephen Paea on Tuesday, then signed former Denver Broncos nose tackle Terrance Knighton and cornerback Justin Rogers, who finished last season with the Redskins, on Friday afternoon. Washington also signed Ricky Jean Francois, another defensive lineman, last last month.
