Two North Carolina parents were charged with five counts of misdemeanor child abuse after their children were found living in a filthy house occupied by their dead grandfather.

Five children were taken away from Melissa Kay Lynn Poole, 25, and Jeremy Daniel Dishner, 39, by the Department of Social Services after their five children were found in a Statesville, N.C., home with raw sewage and their grandfather — who had been dead for at least 24 hours, USA Today reported Wednesday.

The children who were taken into custody by DSS range in ages from 9 months old to 13 years.

Both Ms. Poole and Mr. Dishner have been released on bond, USA Today reported.

Iredell County DSS did not respond for comment in the news outlet.
