Robert Gibbs, President Obama’s former press secretary, is joining McDonald’s as “executive vice president, global chief communications officer,” the fast food chain announced Tuesday.

In the role, Mr. Gibbs will lead the McDonald’s corporate relations group, managing internal and external communications and government and public affairs and “will lead McDonald’s in communicating clear, coordinated messages to internal and external constituencies, enhancing the brand and supporting corporate strategies,” the company said.

The former press secretary will join Silvia Lagnado, Executive Vice President, Global Chief Marketing Officer, in an effort to create “a more modern, progressive burger company,” said McDonald’s President and CEO Steve Easterbrook.

Mr. Gibbs co-founded The Incite Agency, a communications firm, in 2013, after serving as Mr. Obama’s press secretary during the president’s first term and as senior campaign advisor during Mr. Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign.

First Lady Michelle Obama, whose “Let’s Move!” campaign promotes healthy eating and exercise, actually gave the fast food giant a shout-out in 2011 when it announced healthier options for children’s Happy Meals.
