The D.C. region is under a tornado watch through 8 p.m. Monday evening as severe thunderstorms move through the area.
The National Weather Service issued the watch alert Monday afternoon in areas including the District, parts of central and northern Virginia, and central Maryland counties up through Baltimore.
Severe thunderstorms and strong winds are also expected to pass through the region and could last into the overnight hours.
A tornado watch does not mean that a tornado has been spotted, but that weather conditions are conducive to formation.
“There is no imminent threat of a tornado at this point,” said NWS meteorologist Matt Elliott. “The damaging wind threat from the storm would be the greatest threat at this point.”
Areas under the current tornado watch include: Anne Arundel, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George’s, Carroll, Frederick, Baltimore, and Harford counties and Baltimore city in Maryland; King George, Spotsylvania, Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William, Stafford, Culpeper, Fauquier, and Loudoun counties in Virginia; as well as the District.
