A former top adviser to President Obama applauded former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for calling out specific Republicans on the issue of voting rights Thursday and called GOP efforts to restrict the vote “repulsive.”
In a speech Thursday calling for expanded early voting, among other items, Mrs. Clinton had called out several potential 2016 GOP rivals, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, for their respective records on the issue.
Asked Friday whether it was smart to start naming Republicans, former Obama senior adviser and CNN contributor Dan Pfeiffer said, “Oh, absolutely.”
“I think first, the policy proposals she put out are exactly right on the issues, and it is true that the efforts Republicans have done, whether they’re 2016 contenders or not, to restrict voting is actually repulsive,” Mr. Pfeiffer said on CNN. “We should want more people to vote. So I think what she did last night was good policy and good politics.”
Mr. Pfeiffer predicted that Mr. Obama would continue to make the case on the issue, pointing out that the president appointed a commission after the 2012 election with his former campaign lawyer and the former campaign lawyer for 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney and states are being pushed to implement recommendations.
