OPINION:
Rick Perry jumped into the 2016 presidential race on Thursday, hurling a barb at a few of opponents who don’t happen to be former governors.
“Leadership is not a speech on the Senate floor,” Perry said. said. “It’s not what you say. It’s what you do.”
The zinger, which may have been targeted at President Obama, a first-term senator when he was elected in 2008, was also a swipe at Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, who with two lengthy filibusters has become a professional talker.
While many of his rivals have little to no executive experience, Perry ran, as he noted, the 12th largest economy in the world as governor of Texas. And he wants the 2016 election to be about real leadership ability, not talk.
“This will be a ‘show-me, don’t tell me’ election, where voters look past the rhetoric to the real record,” Perry said. “The question of every candidate will be this one: ‘when have you led?’”
“Let’s give them real leadership,” he said.
