Public policymakers in Japan are mulling the idea of installing elevator toilets due to the region’s frequent seismic activity and the power outages that follow.
Officials between Japan’s infrastructure ministry and elevator industry have agreed to study the feasibility of emergency toilets, The Guardian reported Wednesday.
One option that officials are looking at includes cardboard structures with absorbent material inside, the newspaper reported.
The newspaper reported that Japan has roughly 620,000 elevators in public or commercial buildings.
A magnitude-7.8 quake struck Saturday off the Ogasawara islands, injuring 12 people and disrupting train service.
